The Athletic x Nike: Unwritten

In the summer of 2021, The Athletic collaborated with Nike Football to produce The Unwritten.
Six young, up-and-coming football writers shared their football stories in their own words, focussing on 5 key themes: women in football, diversity, Nike talent, community and mental health.
Our challenge was to develop an aesthetic that reflected the nature of the sport combined with Nike’s evolved football aesthetic and colour scheme, without straying too far from The Athletics’ well-known visual language.
We worked alongside Rosie Lee Creative to produce a graphic for each unique piece of writing, that collected together as a cohesive series. We adopted the chaotic nature of football through a layered collage aesthetic.
We sought to bridge the gap between The Athletic and Nike’s graphic styles, whilst subtly referencing the forgotten aesthetic of football fanzines and match day programmes.
The resulting artworks present an eclectic mix of photographic imagery along with shape, colour and illustrative marks to form a vibrant and energetic aesthetic for the digital campaign.
